I am writing this for myself as a way to structure my learning journey for programming, and to note down some questions that I still have. The reason that I want to learn how to program is because I want to create my own Flashcard (web)application for my language learning website Language Atlas by the end of 2025. This will allow me to stop depending on Anki. I learn best by doing, and therefore my learning strategy will be very much based on learning by doing. Naturally learning and doing go hand in hand. However, structuring things in such a way makes things easier for me. If this essay should help you too, then all the better, but it helps to know your own learning style before deciding to copy mine. In this essay I will talk about how I plan to learn programming, do (small) projects, and share what I do.

I will learn programming from freeCodeCamp. I enjoy the method as it immediately lets you write code and it explains things as you go. I am currently doing the first step “Responsive Web Design”. I don’t think that all steps are necessary to reach my goal, but I will see as I go. From my current understanding, it helps to know a framework/library if you want to create (web)applications. My research thus far has brought me to Svelte/Firebase to create my own Flashcard (web)application. This is not a definitive choice, and I don’t know how I plan to learn this. I believe that when the time comes I will have solved this problem too.

I will do challenges from Frontendmentor to put my learning into practice. I will do challenges that are at my own level and then continuously progress to higher levels. I will share my results on GitHub.

I will work on my own Flashcard (web)application in an iterative manner. I notice that my level is low. This makes adding all the features that I want difficult. When I generate the features with Claude, I notice that I don’t understand the code. I do not wish to have code that I don’t understand. I believe, therefore, that it is better to work in an iterative manner. I will only add features that are at or close to my understanding. As I improve, it will be easier for me to add more and more features. I also want to be able to (re)create things by myself and without Claude. A strategy could therefore be to ask Claude to create something. Then I would see if I understand it and am able to recreate it myself without Claude’s help. One question that I still have is when and how to release the minimal viable product. Again, I believe that when the time comes I will have solved this problem too.

I will share my progress via this website and through Twitter. On Twitter I can use #learninpublic and #buildinpublic. Currently, I am not sure if I should also share other content or thoughts on Twitter. In the future, I may create a community on Discord to talk to people who are interested in my Flashcard (web)application, as well as an email-list. I want to do this to keep myself accountable, share what I have learnt with the world, and most of all, it seems like a lot of fun.

I have attempted to learn how to program in the past and fell off track. This time I have a good rhythm and am making good progress. It is my hope that with this strategy that combines learning, doing, and working in an iterative manner on my own Flashcard (web)application, I will reach my goal. How fun would it be to look back at this a year later and see that I reached my goal? And who knows, perhaps through this journey I will encounter things that I was not aware of at the time of writing that are even more fun!

Have you ever had the feeling “If I had known, I would have never done this”?

It’s awful right?

I have experienced this in my life a few times.

Luckily I have learnt from my mistakes and created some life lessons from them.

I want to share with you some life lessons.

Perhaps you will laugh at some.

However, I thought it would be fun to share them anyway.

And who knows, perhaps they will help you too.

So, without further ado, here are my life lessons!

Whenever you move to a new place, make sure that you always have food, water, soap, and toilet paper in your accommodation. These are important products that you will need at all times.

When you travel, make sure that you have some dollars with you.

Charge the battery of your phone before you go to bed, and carry a power bank with you for longer travels.

Most of the things you fear only exist in your head. People are too absorbed in their own lives to care much about what others are doing. You fight the worst battles in your mind.

Make sure that you sleep 8 hours every day, and go to bed and wake up at the same time. Consistency is key.

No screens for at least an hour before you go to bed.

Exercise at least 30 minutes every day.

Floss before you go to bed.

Trust your nose.

Calling someone is better than sending an email if you want to get things done.

Be punctual.

Don’t wait until the last minute to do something.

If you want to create a new habit then take small consistent actions. Choose a fixed moment in the day in which you will perform this new action and start as small as possible. The kaizen method is a good starting point if you want to read more about this.

Put a fixed amount of your income in your savings account and index funds every month.

Spend a summer in a foreign country and do a summer school to learn a new language. It will be one of the most enriching experiences in your life. I can personally recommend the summer school of the University of Toulouse.

Never go (grocery) shopping on an empty stomach.

Parisians don’t smile.

Never plan a business activity with a French person between 12:00 and between 14:00. They have lunch then.

If you are like me then you probably like sunshine. In fact, people report something called a winter depression because of the absence of the sun. Plan your holidays accordingly to when sunshine is absent in your country. In the Netherlands, sunshine is most absent from November until January, so it would be better to not be there during those months. Have a look at the sunshine per country overview.

Test things before putting it out to the world.

Sleeping in a completely dark bedroom is amazing. Humans sleep a lot better in environments that are completely dark. Buy curtains that completely block any sunshine, and be mindful that no light enters through the edges. It would be wise to invest in a custom build solution that blocks all light.

Check your alarm before you go to bed.

Check your website every month for broken links.

Every month you should pretend to be a user of your website, use it, and see what you learn.

Check your work to fix mistakes. Yes you made a mistake. Go check it and find out.

Things break. Get used to it.

Make backups of important things.

The time we have is limited. Become aware of the nonsense in your life and cut it. Spend your time doing the things that you really want to.

You are much more likely to regret not doing something than you are to regret doing something. Go out and do it!

Become aware of what tempts you to do bad or unhealthy things and cut that out of your life. In my case I know that I could reach for sweets rather than cooking if given the choice. To avoid this I don’t purchase any sweets so that I am not tempted. This leads to more healthy meals being made and consumed. Another one is anything related to technology, news, or social media. I have put a time limit on my smartphone on how long I can use internet, Instagram, and read the news. I have a Chrome extension that I turn on when I work that limits websites that I visit often. I don’t want to have my smartphone in my bedroom and turn off all devices after 22:00. The best way to win the fight against temptation is to not have to fight at all.

Be clear in your communication with people. Share the good things, but also the bad things. People can’t read your mind. If you like something about someone then share that. Giving someone a genuine compliment is a beautfil thing. If something is bothering you then share that too. Frustration can build up and burst if not let go early. So share what you want to share. Do it for you and for them.

Don’t eat oysters.

Don’t use slashes in file names. In fact, don’t use slashes for naming anything digitally.

Always ensure you get a confirmation email when you cancel a service or a subscription. If you don’t receive an email confirming you left then you didn’t really leave.

A lack of good sleep and food will destroy your well-being. Sleep well and eat well and you will feel the positive effects.

For a very long time I have had the ambition to learn how to program.

With great pride I can say that today I have started the 100 days of code – web development BootCamp.

My goal is to be able to make a website such as RemoteOK and be able to create an online flashcard solution similar to Anki for my website Language Atlas.

Knowing how to program is such a valuable skill and I look forward to knowing how to do this.

However, as you may know yourself, it is easy to let go of a goal and just stop working towards it.

Therefore I publicly want to say that in 100 days I will finish this Bootcamp.

This means that on the 28th of April 2022 I will have finished the BootCamp!

I will also upload the certificate of completion at the point.

By saying it so publically I hope to hold myself accountable.

If there are goals that you have I urge you to pursue them too!

I see this learning process as a journey.

Some kind of road that you are walking on.

I am curious what kind of side-paths and surprises I will encounter on this road.

I will keep you updated on my progress on this website!

So you want to create a WordPress website, but don’t know how?

In this post I am going to tell you exactly how to create a WordPress website.

It will contain all the steps that I also take when I create a WordPress website.

This is a post that I will be continuously editing.

So, please don’t be surprised if it is incomplete.

Domain Name

When you create a WordPress website, you have to give it a name.

You can go to Namecheap to find an available domain name.

If you are targeting an international audience then I would recommend getting a .com website.

Most people always think of a .com for a website.

I understand that a lot of .com domain names are taken, but if you can get a .com, then I would advise you to do it.

Other alternatives are .co, and .org if you are a non-profit.

If you are only targeting people in your own country then you can get the domain ending that belongs to your country.

Hosting

I personally adore a hosting company called WPX.

You can get amazing service and fast websites for a relatively cheap price.

I also use WPX for all my websites.

You can also buy your domain name at WPX here if you want to get a .com website.

If it is not a .com domain then you can buy it at Namecheap.

Installing WordPress on your website

Installing WordPress on your website is very easy.

All you have to do is ask WPX to install it for you and it will do it for you.

You are done in a few minutes.

Use Elementor to create a beautiful website

Let’s face it, you probably don’t know how to code.

Yet, you still want a beautiful website.

Enter Elementor.

Elementor is a beginner-friendly page builder that allows people with no coding skills to make beautiful websites.

Go to plugins and type Elementor to install the free version of Elementor.

Once you have done that you can buy the Pro version of Elementor.

Login on Elementor and click on download Elementor Pro.

Go to your plugins and click on upload plugin, once you have done that you can upload Elementor Pro.

After you have done that you can activate Elementor Pro.

Track Visitors Through Google Analytics

My aim with this website is to use it as a place where I just write what I want.

Things that interest me.

Business advice.

My thoughts on current affairs.

And whatever else is just on my mind.

I believe that you get the picture.

At the time of writing, I have no particular goal with samdenishin.com, nor any timetable that dictates how much and what I should write about.

Perhaps this will change as time passes.

But for now, I just want this to be something enjoyable and with no expectations.

Enjoy!
